Description

On Route 1, connecting Portsmouth, NH to Kittery, ME, is The World War I Memorial Bridge. This vertical-lift bridge spans the Piscataqua River. When entering this bridge it has an overhead plaque that reads "Memorial to the Sailors and Soldiers of New Hampshire who gave their lives in the World War 1917–1919."
The original bridge was a joint venture between the states of New Hampshire and Maine. It was constructed between 1920 and 1923. After many decades of use, in 2010 the existing bridge was deemed unrepairable.
The new bridge, constructed over two of the existing piers, was officially opened on August 8, 2013.
This bridge is truly impressive when seen at night with it's ever-changing colored lights towering over the skyline, and reflecting in the river below.
